Colorectal and General Surgery
General surgery encompasses a variety of conditions and operations with a focus on the abdomen. Colorectal surgery is a subspecialty of general surgery, and it focuses on the treatment of disorders of the colon, rectum and anus. Whilst training in general surgery includes some colorectal surgery, it is difficult to achieve high quality training in colorectal surgery. This has occurred due to the increasing complexity of colorectal operations performed and the higher standards the community deserves.
Mr Michael Hong has undertaken additional years of training in colorectal surgery to achieve these high standards. He has performed numerous laparoscopic (‘keyhole’) and open colorectal resections (removal of bowel) as well as minor colorectal operations. He maintains his expertise through regular appraisal of the latest scientific evidence to provide the highest possible quality of care. In addition, Michael has undertaken GESA Recertification, which demonstrates continual delivery of high quality colonoscopy (camera test of the large bowel).
Michael offers expertise in a wide range of elective and emergency operations, and his interests include:
- Colorectal cancer – laparoscopic / open
- Inflammatory bowel disease – surgical management
- Diverticular disease
- Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy (GESA Recertified)
- Perianal Disease: Haemorrhoids, Anal Fistula, Anal Fissure
- Rectal Prolapse
- Pilonidal disease
- Hernias – laparoscopic / open
- Appendix- laparoscopic / open
